Zavaliv (ukr. Завалів) was founded in the 14th century. In 19 - beginning 20th century - in the province of Galicia in Austria-Hungary. In 1919–39 - as part of Poland, in 1939–91 - USSR.
In 1890 396 Jews (30.8%) lived in Zavaliv,
in 1921 - 137 Jews (13.9%).
Jews lived in Zavaliv from the 16th century.
In the beginning 18th century rabbi of Zavaliv was Yoel Galpern, in the end 18 - beginning 19th century - pupil of Dov-Ber from Mezhirich Shmul Zainville, in 1869-1914 - Dovid-Dov Leuter.
In the beginning 20th century the City Council was headed by Moishe Zonshtein.
In 1916, 2 Jews were evicted from Zavaliv to Ternopil.
In 1920 in Zavaliv occurred a pogrom.
In the 1920-30s branches of various Jewish parties and organizations acted in Zavaliv.
The Jewish population of Zavaliv was destroyed during Holocaust period.
Several Jews were saved by subbotniks who lived in Zavaliv.
