Ivano-Frankivsk district, Ivano-Frankivsk region
Nyzhniv, village in the Ivano-Frankivsk region. Known since 1474.
In the 19th - beginning of the 20th century - in the province of Galicia as part of Austria-Hungary. In 1919–39 - as part of Poland, in 1939–91 - the Ukrainian SSR.
In 1765, in Nyzhniv lived 160 Jews,
in 1900 - 409 (8.4%),
in 1921 - 451 (9.7%),
in 1938 - 685 Jews.
Jews lived in Nyzhniv since the 18th century. In the 2nd half of the 18th century, a community was created.
In 1852–1907, the rabbin was Ihl-Mihl Hibner, since 1907 - his son-in-law Chaim-Borukh Gokhberg (1865–1929), since 1929 - the son of the last Shmuel-Mordhe (1890–1942).
In the 1920-30s in Nyzhniv acted branches of various Jewish parties and organizations.
In 1934, a school with teaching in Hebrew was opened, and the "Ha-Poel" sports club began to operate.
In June 1941, after the retreat of troops of the Red Army, the pogroms arranged by Ukrainians took place in Nyzhniv. During the pogroms several Jews were killed, the synagogue was destroyed, the Torah scrolls were desecrated.
July 3, 1941 Nyzhniv occupied the Hungarian troops. On July 12, in village arrived about 1 thousand Jews deported from Hungary, then they were sent to Stanislav (now Ivano-Frankivsk).
In August 1941, Nyzhniv entered the German troops. Judenrat and Jewish police were created.
In early May 1942, Jews of Nyzhniv were deported to Stanislav.
After the libertation of Nyzhniv, on April 1, 1944, 10 Jews returned to the village.
