Putyla (ukr. Демидівка), urban-type settlement (since 1961), until 2020 - the district center in the Chernivtsi region. Known from 1501. In the 19th-early 20th centuries - the village of Putila-Staronets of the Vizhnits eldership of the province of Bukovina as part of Austria-Hungary. In 1918-40 - as part of Romania, in 1940-91 - of the Ukrainian SSR.
In 1930, 382 Jews lived in Putyla.
Jews of Putyla were the Vizhnits Hasids. There were a synagogue, a Jewish library.
In 1933, a kindergarten was opened with teaching in Hebrew.
In the 1920-30s there were branches of various Jewish parties and organizations.
After the occupation by the Romanian troops, the Jews of Putyla in July 1941 were deported to Transnistria.
